1. Data We Collect

We collect only what is necessary to provide the app's features:

• Account information — name, username, email address, age, and gender (provided at sign-up)
• Approximate location — your GPS position, fuzzed to ±1 km, to place you on the map
• Watch activity — movies and TV shows you log, ratings, and reviews you write
• Friends list — UIDs of users you add as friends (mutual)
• Custom lists — Favourites, Watch Later, and any lists you create
• Push notification token — your Expo push token, used only to send "now watching" alerts to friends who have opted in
• Letterboxd import data — your watch history CSV if you choose to import it

2. How We Use Your Data

• Displaying your location on the map to friends
• Showing what you are currently watching on map pins
• Powering your watch history, ratings, and lists
• Sending push notifications to friends when you start watching (once per day maximum; you can revoke notification permission at any time in iOS Settings)
• No advertising. We do not serve ads or sell your data to advertisers.

3. Third-Party Services

MovieMap uses the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:

• Firebase (Google) — authentication, database, and cloud storage. Data is stored in the EU (europe-west2) region. Privacy policy: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
• TMDB (The Movie Database) — movie and TV metadata, poster images, and streaming availability. We use their official API. No personal data is sent to TMDB. Privacy policy: themoviedb.org/privacy-policy
• Expo Push Notification Service — delivery of "now watching" notifications. Only your push token is sent. Privacy policy: expo.dev/privacy
• JustWatch (via TMDB) — streaming provider availability data, displayed inside the app. No personal data is shared.

4. Location Data

Location access is required for the core map feature. We request "while using the app" permission. Your exact GPS coordinates are fuzzed (randomised within ±1 km) before storage, so your precise address is never revealed to other users or stored in our database. Your approximate city name is derived via reverse geocoding and displayed on your profile.

Location is updated once per session when you open the app. We do not track location in the background.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

Your data is stored for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account at any time from the Account screen (Settings → Account → Delete Account). Deletion is permanent and removes all your data from our servers within 30 days.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Your profile (name, avatar, current movie, watch history) is visible to other authenticated MovieMap users. You control your watch history visibility through the app's privacy settings.

7. Children's Privacy

MovieMap is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
